Back in the end of August, id Software released the Apple and Linux clients of QuakeLive. For those that aren’t aware, these clients are free to use and the game is free to play. There are no hidden fees or micropayments. It’s nothing but splash damage, rocket jumps and fragging goodness! The official release date was during the weekend of this year’s QuakeCon. This version of QuakeLive offers Duels, Free For all/Deathmtach, CTF, Clan/Team modes, Leaderboards and everything that you’d expect from the original version of Quake 3.
Personally, I tested the Linux version on Ubuntu 8.10. The game runs smoothly in all kinds of modes including fullscreen. This was done on a full desktop running at 1.2ghz and a eeePC 701 both with 1 gig of ram and Firefox. I’ll update later when I overclock my 701 and test out higher resolutions. Any others with Windows (XP or Vista or 7) or Mac users have a good time with it?
